![]() ![]() Like you I had put a decent amount of money into my car prior to the transmission failing so the rest of the car was still in decent shape and why I decided to go ahead with the transmission rebuild. I did the cleaning to get my car running long enough to planned for the rebuild. If you suspect your transmission filter may be clogged up and you have any interest in cleaning it I have notes and some pictures I can provide. ![]() I was only able to clean the filter through a drilled hole in the transmission case using straw cleaning brushes and cleaner, which was effective but when I later took the transmission apart to rebuild it the filter was clogged because of very worn friction plates so even if you can clean the filter the transmission is living on borrowed time although you may be able to get considerably more miles out of the car. When the transmission did fail on you while driving the car, what happened, what were the symptoms?īased on my experience with these transmissions and if the filter is clogged, flushing won't clean the crud off the filter. Do you hear any whining sounds from the transmission? Whining is a symptom of the pump being starved and it occurs in PRND and increases with engine rpm. What can happen with the high mileage transmission is clogging of the filter and the pump becomes starved for fluid and this results in no primary fluid pressure or operation in any gear. Information on the "Gibbons method" here: The BIG Transmission Posting: Gibbons method + other goodies!! I did this myself, on the one car that the flush didn't save the transmission. Parts to rebuild are ~$1300, including a remanufactured valve body and torque converter. This is best done with Vida.Ī rebuilt transmission will be ~$2700, plus labor. Then you need to get the codes reset, and the oil monitor reset. So for <$60, if you can do this yourself, the transmission can be flushed. There are many on these forums that dislike the Valvoline MaxLife oil, but I use it exclusively. You need to ensure that 3309 compliant oil is used in the transmission. I use the "gibbons method" to flush the oil. I also typically add a can of Seafoam "trans tune" into the transmission oil and run the engine, while shifting it thru the gears. We have done this on a three different 2001's, and 2 of them are still on the road, after there owners were told by shops that the transmissions were dead. If it were mine, I would flush the transmission. ![]()
